Barrington Stage Company

A not-for-profit professional theatre company in the Berkshires producing stage work, developing new plays and musicals, and running arts education programmes across multiple venues.

Barrington Stage Company (BSC) is a not-for-profit professional theatre company in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Founded in 1995 in Sheffield and now based in downtown Pittsfield, it works across three areas: producing theatrical work, developing new plays and musicals, and community educational outreach. The company was founded by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and former Managing Director Susan Sperber; as of 2026 it is led by Artistic Director Alan Paul and Executive Director Greg Reiner.

New work is central to BSC's activity. The company developed, workshopped and premiered the musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2004, which transferred to Broadway and won two Tony Awards. Development programmes include the Burman New Play Award and the Musical Theatre Lab. Mainstage and smaller-scale productions are staged across several venues: the 520-seat Boyd-Quinson Mainstage Theatre; the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center, housing the 132-seat St. Germain Stage and the 99-seat Mr. Finn's Cabaret; and the Wolfson Theater Center.

Technical and production work is supported by a 22,100-square-foot Production Center used for scenic construction. BSC's stated technical domains include theatrical production, new play and musical development, scenic construction and production design, and arts education and youth programming. Its educational outreach work is described as cultivating the creative power of young people through live theatre and nurturing the next generation of artists.
