The University of Arkansas System is Arkansas's statewide public higher education network. Founded in 1871 as the state's first land-grant institution, it comprises 22 campuses, divisions and units, enrolling more than 70,000 students and employing over 28,000 people. Its total budget exceeds $4 billion, and recent federal appropriations across the system topped $105 million.
The system's structure spans six universities, eight community colleges and two law schools, alongside the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the state's medical education and research facility. Its flagship campus in Fayetteville is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation among the nation's top 2 percent of universities with highest research activity. Institutions operate across a wide range of disciplines, including medicine and medical research, law, agriculture, technology, higher education research and workforce development.
The system describes itself as rooted in the land-grant tradition of expanding access to academic, practical and professional opportunities, with an emphasis on serving the economic, educational and cultural advancement of Arkansas and on reaching communities statewide.
