Chicago Sun-Times

A nonprofit Chicago news organisation founded in 1948, publishing journalism across broadcast, print and digital as the flagship paper of Chicago Public Media.

The Chicago Sun-Times is a nonprofit local news organisation founded in 1948 through the merger of the Chicago Sun and the Daily Times. It publishes award-winning journalism across broadcast, print and digital platforms and serves as the flagship newspaper of Chicago Public Media, alongside WBEZ and Vocalo. Its work spans breaking news, politics, arts, culture and sports, and reaches more than 3.3 million people weekly across its three platforms.

Creative work at the paper sits within print journalism, digital publishing, broadcast media, investigative reporting and audience membership platforms. The newsroom employs approximately 250 professionals and has won eight Pulitzer Prizes over more than 70 years of operation. The organisation describes its brand ethos as the "hardest-working paper in America".

Since becoming a nonprofit, the Sun-Times has been funded through a reader membership programme rather than hedge-fund ownership; it is supported by nearly 97,000 members and states that 100% of its journalism is independently funded. Its stated mission is to hold power to account and strengthen local democracy. The organisation is based in Chicago, Illinois, with digital reach across the United States.
